ROYAL DOULTON for BAILEY, BANKS, & BIDDLE (Designed by Robert Allen Studios)

This is a set of 10 gorgeous 10-1/2" service plates made by Royal Doulton, and sold by the high end retailer Bailey, Banks, & Biddle of Philadelphia, PA.  The pattern was designed by the Robert Allen Studios as designated by the Ra number on the back.  Records from this studio can date a pattern by the number; in this case Ra Y221 indicates the pattern was issued between Dec. 1925 and Nov. 1928.
These vintage plates are pink and gold on a cream ground. The wreath design is enhanced by bows in raised paste gold. There are swags of raised gold dots with graduated size, and a theme of rays of gold extending through the pink rim and in 'sun rays' inside the outer scalloped border. Many raised gold accents occur throughout the design.  To top things off, there are 1/4" wide gold trims at the edge and inner verge, which feature a stylized floral design.
All this detail puts these plates in a high category ~ affirmed by the gilded base on the back side of each plate, a nice touch reserved for Royal Doulton's finest service plates.  This set is in excellent condition, with no chips, cracks, gold wear, repairs, etc.  Barely a scratch!

Doulton Artist Robert Allen and Doulton’s RA Numbers

Robert Allen worked for Royal Doulton at Burslem as a designer from 1870 to 1929, he started when it was still called Pinder Bourne.

He became head of department and lead a team of artists and craftsmen turning out the most expensive types of fine china.

Doulton pieces signed by Robert Allen are relatively rare, but pieces made under his direction with ‘RA’ and a number are much more readily available.

Hand-painted Doulton pieces designed and decorated by Robert Allen and the artists based in his studios were marked with RA-numbers.

RA numbers are usually added by hand, and accompany the usual Doulton mark and design or pattern numbers.

Robert Allen hand-painted wares were not reproduced in great numbers and some pieces have probably never have been reproduced.
